Knight of the 7th Cuirassier Regiment, Magdeburg, Prussia, 1870, 1:30, Del Prado

Cuirassiers formed the heavy cavalry of the Prussian Army and, well into the nineteenth century, retained many of the traditions associated with Europe's great mounted formations. Protected by their distinctive metal cuirasses and principally armed with sabres, they were intended to deliver powerful charges and exploit breaks in enemy formations. The Prussian 7th Cuirassier Regiment was associated with Magdeburg and formed part of a cavalry arm that had undergone considerable modernisation during the preceding decades.
This figure depicts a cavalryman of the 7th Cuirassier Regiment in 1870, the year the Franco-Prussian War began. During the conflict, Prussian cavalry was extensively employed for reconnaissance, screening army movements, communications and pursuit of enemy forces. Although the increasing range and accuracy of firearms made traditional mounted charges progressively more dangerous, cuirassiers remained prestigious troops and a powerful symbol of Prussian military tradition. Victory over France in 1870-1871 culminated in the proclamation of the German Empire and profoundly altered the political balance of Europe.
