The Ayanami class was a kind of destroyer built for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) in the late 1950s. The main objective was anti-submarine warfare, so this class was classified as "DDK" ( anti-submarine hunter-killer destroyer) unofficially. This class adopted a "long castillage" design with a later slope called "Holland Slope", which bears the name of the picturesque sloping street in the city of Nagasaki. Their steam turbine propulsion systems were similar to those of the Harukaze class, but they varied between each craft in the class as part of JMSDF's attempt to find the best propulsion system for their future surface ships. The Ayanami class were the first ships of the JMSDF equipped with six Mark 22 3-inch / 50-gauge guns with Mark 33 dual mounts and Mark 32 light torpedoes with two Mark 2 side launchers. The 3-inch weapons were controlled by two Mark 63 GFCS. The seven boats were named in honor of the Fubuki and Yūgumo destroyer classes of the Second World War era, and Ayanami was named in honor of a fubuki-class destroyer of the same name that was lost in action on Guadalcanal. The remaining six were also named by the destroyers of the Imperial Japanese Navy of World War II lost during the war.
