Arab cavalryman in WWI, 1:30, Del Prado

Arab cavalry soldier in World War I, 1:30, Del Prado

During the First World War, Arab forces played an important role in military operations in the Middle East against the Ottoman Empire. From 1916, the Arab Revolt, led by Sharif Hussein of Mecca and his sons, mobilised numerous tribal forces with the objective of weakening Ottoman control over the Arabian Peninsula and surrounding regions. Their knowledge of the terrain and exceptional mobility made Arab horsemen particularly effective for operations across the desert.
This figure depicts an Arab cavalryman during the First World War. Mounted fighters participated in raids, reconnaissance missions and attacks against Ottoman communications, outposts and railway lines, frequently relying on highly mobile tactics. The Arab campaign was supported by British liaison officers, including T. E. Lawrence, later popularly known as “Lawrence of Arabia”. The operations conducted by these forces contributed to the weakening of Ottoman power in the region and became one of the best-known episodes of the war in the Middle East.
