Knight in Armor, 2nd century, China, 1:30, Del Prado

During the 2nd century, China was ruled by the Eastern Han dynasty, a period in which cavalry played an essential role in defending the empire's northern frontiers. Continuing confrontations with the nomadic peoples of the steppes encouraged the development of highly mobile mounted forces capable of operating over considerable distances. Cavalrymen could employ lances, swords and projectile weapons, combining mobility with increasingly sophisticated forms of protection.
This figure depicts an armoured Chinese cavalryman of the 2nd century equipped for mounted combat. Lamellar and small-plate armour was characteristic of Chinese armies of this period, providing a useful balance between protection and freedom of movement. The growing importance of cavalry during the Han dynasty contributed significantly to the empire's ability to defend its extensive frontiers and maintain its influence over the trade routes connecting China with Central Asia.
