Bengal Lancer, 1888, 1:30, Del Prado

The Bengal Lancers were among the most distinguished cavalry units of the British Indian Army during the nineteenth century. Recruited mainly from the warrior communities of northern India, they were renowned for their discipline, horsemanship and skill with the lance. Serving within Britain's colonial forces, they took part in numerous campaigns along the North-West Frontier, Afghanistan and other regions of the British Empire, carrying out reconnaissance, escort and cavalry charge missions whenever required.
This figure depicts a Bengal Lancer in 1888, a period when these cavalrymen wore their distinctive uniforms with turbans, pennoned lances and cavalry sabres. Although the growing effectiveness of repeating firearms gradually reduced the battlefield role of traditional cavalry, the Bengal Lancers remained a highly respected force and an enduring symbol of British military power in India. Their fame extended well beyond military history through literature and cinema, making them one of the best-known cavalry regiments of the British Empire.
