The Bristol Beaufort was a twin-engine torpedo bomber developed by the Bristol Aeroplane Company for the Royal Air Force in the late 1930s. Entering service in 1939, it played a crucial role during the early years of the Second World War in maritime strike, bombing, reconnaissance and mine-laying operations. Powered by two Bristol Taurus radial engines and capable of carrying either a torpedo or a substantial bomb load, the Beaufort served extensively in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific theatres. The RAF employed the aircraft in numerous operations against enemy shipping and naval forces, particularly during the Mediterranean campaigns. Although eventually replaced by more advanced aircraft, the Bristol Beaufort made a significant contribution to British torpedo bomber development and provided the basis for the highly successful Bristol Beaufighter. Its rugged construction, versatility and operational effectiveness make it one of the most important British military aircraft of the early Second World War period.
