At the end of the nineteenth century, British cavalry continued to perform important reconnaissance, flank protection, communications and combat duties during the campaigns of the British Empire. One of the most important theatres was the Sudan, where Anglo-Egyptian forces fought against the Mahdist State.
In 1898, the Anglo-Egyptian army commanded by General Herbert Kitchener advanced towards Khartoum with the objective of decisively defeating the Mahdist forces. The campaign combined modern rifles, artillery and machine guns with traditional cavalry and other mounted troops.
The decisive engagement was the Battle of Omdurman on 2 September 1898. Kitchener's forces defeated the Mahdist army in a battle that demonstrated the overwhelming effectiveness of modern military firepower.
Omdurman also witnessed one of the best-known British cavalry actions of the period. The 21st Lancers charged Mahdist warriors concealed in a depression in the ground. After fierce close combat, the regiment broke through the enemy formation and later continued the action dismounted. Among its officers was the young Winston Churchill, who personally took part in the charge.
The 1898 campaign represented one of the final major episodes of traditional British cavalry warfare before the conflicts of the early twentieth century profoundly changed the role of mounted troops.
