Caesar's Cavalry Officer, Numidia, 100 BC, 1:30, Del Prado

Caesar's Cavalry Officer, Numidia, 100 BC, 1:30, Del Prado

The Numidian cavalry was regarded as one of the finest light cavalry forces of the ancient world. Recruited from the kingdoms of Numidia in North Africa, its horsemen became famous for their exceptional mobility, speed and skill in harassing enemy formations with javelins before rapidly withdrawing. During the final years of the Roman Republic, many Numidian riders served as auxiliary troops under Julius Caesar, making an important contribution to his military campaigns.
This figure depicts a cavalry officer serving Julius Caesar, inspired by the Numidian horsemen who fought alongside the Roman legions. Armed with a light spear and shield, he represents the agile mounted warriors whose mobility and battlefield experience proved invaluable to Roman commanders. Although the collection identifies the figure as 100 BC, the equipment and historical context more closely reflect the period of Caesar's campaigns during the 1st century BC.
