Cavalry Officer, Thessalonica, 330 B.C., 1:30, Del Prado

Macedonian cavalry officers were instrumental in the extraordinary military successes of Alexander the Great. Drawn mainly from the Macedonian nobility, they commanded the famous Companion Cavalry (Hetairoi), regarded as the finest shock cavalry of the ancient world. From the region of Thessalonica and the rest of Macedonia, these horsemen underwent rigorous training that enabled them to execute rapid manoeuvres and devastating charges with the long xyston lance, often deciding the outcome of battle.
This figure depicts a Macedonian cavalry officer around 330 BC, during Alexander the Great's Asian campaigns. Equipped with helmet, cuirass, shield and lance, he represents the commanders who led the Companion Cavalry at decisive battles such as Issus, Gaugamela and the conquest of the Persian Empire. Their leadership, discipline and tactical skill played a vital role in the creation of one of history's greatest empires.
