Chasseur of Africa, 1850, 1:30, Del Prado
The Chasseurs d'Afrique were French light cavalry units established in Algeria from 1831. Originally created for service in North Africa, they became renowned for their mobility and ability to operate effectively across difficult terrain, developing into one of the most distinctive mounted formations of the nineteenth-century French Army.
This figure depicts a Chasseur d'Afrique around 1850, when these units were closely associated with French military operations in Algeria. Their colourful uniforms and light cavalry role made them particularly recognisable. In subsequent decades the Chasseurs d'Afrique would also fight outside North Africa and establish an outstanding reputation within the French cavalry.
