Biplano SE5A, Royal Aircraft Factory, Captain W.A. Billy Bishop, Royal Flying Corps, No. 60 Squadron, England, 1917, 1:48, Corgi
The Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a is widely regarded as one of the finest Allied fighter aircraft of the First World War. Developed to combine speed, stability and firepower, the S.E.5a became the preferred mount of many British and Commonwealth aces. Corgi AA37702 reproduces aircraft A8936 flown by Captain William Avery "Billy" Bishop of No. 60 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, during the summer of 1917.
Billy Bishop was one of the most celebrated fighter aces of the British Empire, officially credited with 72 aerial victories and awarded the Victoria Cross for his extraordinary bravery.
The S.E.5a excelled thanks to its excellent high-altitude performance, robust construction and powerful armament, consisting of a synchronized Vickers machine gun and a Lewis gun mounted on the upper wing. These characteristics made it one of the most successful and respected fighter aircraft of the Great War, contributing significantly to Allied air superiority over the Western Front.
