Oliver Cromwell's Ironsides were among the most famous cavalry troops of the Parliamentarian forces during the English Civil War. Their origins can be traced to the cavalry troop raised by Cromwell in 1642, which quickly developed an outstanding reputation for discipline, cohesion and effectiveness in battle.
Unlike many cavalry formations of the period, Cromwell placed particular emphasis on maintaining discipline and keeping his men together after a charge. This allowed the cavalry to regroup rapidly and return to the fighting rather than becoming dispersed while pursuing a defeated enemy.
The cavalrymen fought primarily with swords and pistols and were protected by helmets and various pieces of armour. Cromwell's Ironsides distinguished themselves in several important engagements, most notably at the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644, where Cromwell's cavalry played a major role in the Parliamentarian victory.
The experience gained by these troops subsequently contributed to the creation of the New Model Army in 1645. Parliamentarian cavalry developed into a highly disciplined and effective fighting force that would play a decisive role in the eventual defeat of the Royalist armies.
This figure represents a Cromwell's Ironside, one of the characteristic mounted soldiers of the English Parliamentarian cavalry during the seventeenth century.
