F-4J UK Phantom II 74 Squadron, RAF 1990 "ZE354", 1:72, Hobby Master
Following the Falklands War, the Royal Air Force needed to reinforce its air-defence capability. Some RAF Phantoms had been reassigned to protect the Falkland Islands, while the new Tornado F.3 was not yet available. As an interim solution, Britain purchased fifteen former U.S. Navy F-4Js that had been stored in the United States.
The aircraft were overhauled and modified before delivery to the RAF, receiving British serial numbers ZE350 to ZE364 and the designation F-4J(UK). The first aircraft arrived in Britain in August 1984 and equipped the re-formed No. 74 Squadron at RAF Wattisham. They retained their General Electric J79 engines and much of their American avionics while receiving several modifications for British service.
No. 74 Squadron, traditionally known as “Tiger Squadron”, operated the aircraft primarily in the United Kingdom air-defence role. The F-4J(UK) was subsequently made compatible with the British BAe Skyflash air-to-air missile. The type remained with No. 74 Squadron until early 1991, when it was replaced by Phantom FGR.2 aircraft.
