The Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II is the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the F-35 family, developed primarily for the U.S. Marine Corps. Its propulsion system combines the Pratt & Whitney F135 engine with a lift fan and swivelling exhaust nozzle, allowing the aircraft to operate from amphibious assault ships and relatively short land-based runways.
The F-35B combines low-observable characteristics, advanced sensors and an exceptional ability to integrate and share battlefield information. It can perform air-superiority, ground-attack, reconnaissance and support missions, making it a fundamental component of the modernisation of U.S. Marine Corps aviation.
VMFA-224 is a historic U.S. Marine Corps squadron whose origins date back to the Second World War. Its transition to the F-35B represents a new chapter in the unit's history and brings fifth-generation combat capabilities to its operations.
