The Grumman F4F Wildcat was one of the principal American carrier fighters during the early years of the Second World War. Although it was inferior to the Mitsubishi A6M Zero in some areas of performance, its rugged construction, armament and ability to withstand combat damage made it a formidable opponent when flown using appropriate tactics.
Joseph Jacob “Joe” Foss became one of the most successful U.S. Marine Corps fighter pilots of the war. Flying with VMF-121 during the Guadalcanal campaign, Foss achieved 26 confirmed aerial victories, equalling the American record established by Eddie Rickenbacker during the First World War. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his combat actions in the Pacific.
