This model represents the famous "Minsi III", flown by Commander David McCampbell, Commander Air Group 15 aboard USS Essex (CV-9) in October 1944. McCampbell became the highest-scoring ace in U.S. Navy history with 34 confirmed aerial victories. On 24 October 1944, during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, he achieved one of the greatest feats in naval aviation by shooting down nine Japanese aircraft in a single mission, earning the Medal of Honor. His Hellcat "Minsi III" remains one of the most celebrated aircraft in American military aviation history.
