Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 1:30, Del Prado
Fernando Álvarez de Toledo y Pimentel (1507-1582), 3rd Duke of Alba, was one of the most important military commanders and statesmen of the Spanish Monarchy during the sixteenth century. Known as the Grand Duke of Alba, he enjoyed a long career in the service of Emperor Charles V and later King Philip II of Spain.
From an early age he participated in military campaigns and gained extensive experience in the major European conflicts of his time. He fought against France and the Ottoman Empire and took part in important operations conducted by the armies of Charles V, becoming one of the emperor's most trusted commanders.
In 1547 he played an important role in the Battle of Mühlberg, where the Imperial forces of Charles V defeated the Schmalkaldic League. The victory temporarily strengthened Imperial authority over the Protestant German princes and considerably enhanced Alba's military reputation.
Under Philip II he received further responsibilities. From 1567 to 1573 he served as governor of the Netherlands, where he was charged with restoring Spanish royal authority in the face of political and religious rebellion. His policies were extremely severe, and his administration became closely associated with the repression of the Dutch Revolt.
In 1580, when already over seventy years old, Alba once again commanded an army during the Portuguese succession crisis. His forces defeated those of António, Prior of Crato, at the Battle of Alcântara and occupied Lisbon, contributing decisively to Philip II's recognition as King of Portugal.
Fernando Álvarez de Toledo died in Lisbon in 1582. His long military career across numerous European theatres made the 3rd Duke of Alba one of the most representative military figures of the sixteenth-century Spanish Monarchy.
