Focke Wulf FW-200 Condor, 1937, 1: 200, Atlas
The Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor was originally designed as a long-range civilian airliner for Deutsche Lufthansa and made its maiden flight in 1937. With the outbreak of the Second World War, the aircraft was adapted for military use and became one of the Luftwaffe's most important long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-shipping aircraft. Nicknamed the "Scourge of the Atlantic" by Allied sailors, the Fw 200 played a crucial role during the Battle of the Atlantic by locating and attacking Allied convoys and directing German U-boats toward their targets. Powered by four radial engines and possessing exceptional range for its time, the Condor operated extensively over the Atlantic Ocean, the Arctic and the Mediterranean. In addition to its maritime role, it was also employed as a transport aircraft and as a personal transport for senior German officials, including Adolf Hitler. The Focke-Wulf Fw 200 remains one of the most distinctive and historically significant German aircraft of the Second World War.
