Gaucho, Infernal Regiment, 1814 1:30, Del Prado

The gauchos of northern Argentina played an important role in the struggle against Royalist forces during the wars of independence. From 1814, Martín Miguel de Güemes became increasingly prominent as a leader of the militias of Salta and Jujuy, employing highly mobile mounted forces to harass Royalist troops advancing from Upper Peru.
These horsemen possessed an exceptional knowledge of the terrain and developed an effective form of irregular warfare based on rapid movements, ambushes, surprise attacks and withdrawal before the enemy could organise an effective response.
Although the Del Prado figure is dated 1814, the unit formally known as the División Infernal de Gauchos de Línea was organised by Güemes on 12 September 1815. It was conceived as a cavalry division initially comprising two squadrons, whose men were trained to operate both mounted and on foot.
The famous Infernales of Güemes became one of the most representative forces of the Patriot resistance in northern Argentina. Their operations helped contain successive Royalist incursions and defend the northern frontier while other independence armies conducted campaigns in Chile and Peru.
This Ediciones Del Prado CBH056 miniature represents one of the mounted gauchos associated with the forces that would give rise to Güemes' Infernales. Its reference, scale and designation correspond to the History of Cavalry collection.
