The A-6E represented a major evolution of the original design. It incorporated improved electronic and navigation systems and subsequently gained the ability to employ a wide variety of conventional and precision-guided weapons. Its long range and substantial payload made the Intruder one of the U.S. Navy's principal carrier-based attack aircraft for several decades. Aircraft 151105, identified as “Devil 501”, served with Attack Squadron 196 (VA-196), known as the “Main Battery”. The squadron operated the A-6 Intruder for much of its history and completed numerous deployments aboard U.S. aircraft carriers, including USS Independence. The A-6 remained in service for more than three decades and saw combat from the Vietnam War through to the Gulf War. Its combination of range, payload and all-weather capability made the Intruder one of the most distinctive naval attack aircraft of the second half of the twentieth century.
