Hawker Hurricane Mk.I "Battle of Britain" flown by F/L Arthur "Darky" V. Clowes, No. 1 Sqn., RAF, Nov. 1940 , 1:48, Hobby Master
The Hawker Hurricane Mk.I was one of the RAF's most important fighters during the opening years of the Second World War. Designed by Sydney Camm, it entered operational service in 1937 and represented a major technological advance for British fighter aviation, featuring a monoplane configuration, retractable landing gear and an enclosed cockpit. Normally armed with eight 7.7 mm Browning machine guns, the Hurricane played a major role during the Battle of Britain.
Arthur Victor “Darky” Clowes began his RAF career as ground crew before qualifying as a pilot. Posted to No. 1 Squadron, he fought during the Battle of France and subsequently took part in the defence of Britain. On 16 August 1940, he destroyed a Heinkel He 111 and a Junkers Ju 88 over the South Downs and continued to engage Luftwaffe aircraft during the following weeks. He ultimately received credit for ten confirmed victories, in addition to shared, probable and damaged enemy aircraft.
