Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien, Captain Teruhiko Kobayashi. Chofu Airfield, 1945.
The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien ("Flying Swallow"), known to the Allies by the reporting name "Tony", was one of the most advanced fighters operated by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service during the Second World War. Unlike most Japanese fighters of the period, it was powered by a liquid-cooled Kawasaki Ha-40 inline engine, built under license from the German Daimler-Benz DB 601, providing excellent speed, climb performance and high-altitude capability. This model represents the aircraft flown by Captain Teruhiko Kobayashi from Chofu Airfield, located west of Tokyo, in 1945. Kobayashi was one of Japan's most accomplished fighter aces and became renowned for defending the Japanese homeland against American Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombing raids. As commander of the 244th Sentai, he achieved numerous aerial victories and became one of the most respected fighter leaders of the final stages of the Pacific War. Combining speed, heavy armament and rugged construction, the Ki-61 Hien proved to be one of Japan's most effective interceptor fighters and remains one of the most iconic combat aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service.
