Leopard 2A4, Swiss Armored Battalion, Steel Army Parade, Thun, 2006, 1:72, Panzerkampf
The Panzer 87 Leopard is the Swiss version of the German Leopard 2A4, selected to modernise Switzerland's armoured forces during the 1980s. After an initial batch of vehicles manufactured in Germany, most Swiss tanks were produced under licence in Switzerland. The vehicle retained the fundamental characteristics of the Leopard 2A4, including its Rheinmetall 120 mm smoothbore gun, excellent mobility and an advanced fire-control system for its time.
Serving with the Swiss Army's armoured battalions, the Panzer 87 became the country's principal main battle tank, progressively replacing earlier designs. Swiss vehicles incorporated several modifications to the standard Leopard 2A4 configuration to meet national requirements. Its combination of firepower, protection and mobility made the Panzer 87 Leopard a fundamental component of Switzerland's mechanised and armoured forces.
