Line Cavalry, Regt Nizza, 1844, 1:30, Del Prado

The Nizza Cavalleria Regiment was a historic Piedmontese cavalry unit whose origins date back to the late seventeenth century. During its long history it underwent several reorganisations and changes of designation, serving among the mounted forces of the House of Savoy and later in the army of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
During the first half of the nineteenth century, line cavalry formed an important component of the Sardinian-Piedmontese army. These units were intended to fight in formation, conduct charges against enemy positions and perform reconnaissance, escort and screening duties for the army.
By 1844, only a few years before the campaigns of the First Italian War of Independence, the Piedmontese army was undergoing a period of organisation and modernisation. Its cavalry regiments still retained much of the colourful appearance traditionally associated with nineteenth-century military uniforms while adapting to the changing requirements of warfare.
This figure represents a Line Cavalry trooper of the Nizza Regiment in 1844, reproducing the uniform and equipment of Piedmontese cavalry during the years immediately preceding the wars that would eventually contribute to the unification of Italy.
