The Lockheed P-38J Lightning was one of the most refined versions of America's famous twin-boom fighter, designed by Clarence "Kelly" Johnson. Its distinctive twin-fuselage configuration, combined with two turbo-supercharged Allison V-1710 engines, provided outstanding speed, long range and concentrated firepower from a nose-mounted armament consisting of one 20 mm Hispano cannon and four .50-calibre Browning machine guns. These features made the P-38 an exceptionally versatile aircraft for escort, interception, reconnaissance and ground-attack missions throughout World War II.
This model depicts the Lockheed P-38J Lightning "Virginia Marie", a United States Army Air Forces aircraft operating in the Pacific Theatre. Personalised aircraft names were common among American fighter pilots, who often dedicated their aircraft to wives, girlfriends or family members. Thanks to its exceptional range, the P-38 became one of the most important Allied fighters in the vast Pacific, escorting bombers, attacking Japanese airfields and achieving numerous victories over Imperial Japanese aircraft.
