Marlborough Cavalryman at Blenheim, 1704, 1:30, Del Prado

This mounted trooper represents a cavalryman serving under John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, one of the greatest military commanders of the War of the Spanish Succession. The Battle of Blenheim, fought on 13 August 1704, marked a decisive turning point in the conflict by halting the Franco-Bavarian advance and preserving the balance of power in Europe. Allied cavalry played a crucial role in exploiting breaches created by the infantry, launching powerful charges that broke enemy formations and secured the victory.
This figure depicts a cavalryman serving with Marlborough's army during the 1704 campaign. Equipped with helmet, sword and holster pistols, it reflects the evolution of European heavy cavalry in the early eighteenth century, when full body armour had largely disappeared in favour of greater mobility. The victory at Blenheim established Marlborough as one of Britain's greatest military leaders and remains one of the finest tactical victories in British military history.
