Marshal Turenne, Battle of the Dunes, 1658, 1:30, Del Prado
Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Viscount of Turenne, was one of France's greatest marshals and one of the most respected military commanders of the seventeenth century. During the Franco-Spanish War he led the French armies with exceptional skill, combining rapid manoeuvres, strict discipline and the effective use of cavalry. His campaign reached its climax at the Battle of the Dunes, fought on 14 June 1658 near Dunkirk, where a Franco-English army decisively defeated the combined Spanish and Royalist forces.
This figure depicts Marshal Turenne during the Battle of the Dunes in 1658. Wearing the attire typical of a senior French commander of the period, he represents one of the most admired strategists in European military history. The victory at the Dunes paved the way for the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, confirming France as the dominant continental power in Europe.
