On the morning of December 7, 1941, during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and other military installations in Hawaii, Second Lieutenant George S. Welch and fellow pilot Kenneth M. Taylor reached Haleiwa auxiliary airfield, where several P-40 fighters had escaped the main attacks.
Welch took off in a P-40B of the 47th Pursuit Squadron and flew two combat sorties against Japanese aircraft. He was credited with four victories that day and was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Contemporary material about the Carousel 1 model specifically identifies it as representing Welch's aircraft during the Pearl Harbor attack.
