Soldier Nicolai, Regiment of Dragons, about 1730, 1:30, Del Prado

Dragoon regiments originated as troops capable of moving rapidly on horseback before dismounting to fight as infantry. During the early decades of the eighteenth century they gradually evolved into true cavalry formations, combining mounted mobility with firearms, swords and other traditional cavalry weapons. By around 1730, dragoons had become an essential component of many European armies and were valued for their versatility in reconnaissance, screening, pursuit and battlefield operations.
This figure depicts Private Nicolai of a Dragoon Regiment around 1730. His uniform and equipment represent the period in which the great professional armies of eighteenth-century Europe were becoming increasingly standardised and individual regiments developed their own distinctive colours and insignia. Dragoons participated extensively in the numerous dynastic wars of the period and ultimately became one of the most characteristic branches of European cavalry.
