Knight of the Roman Empire, 236-565, 1:30, Del Prado
Between the third and sixth centuries, cavalry became increasingly important within the armies of the Late Roman Empire. The profound military changes of this period were driven partly by the need to respond rapidly to incursions and enemy movements along Rome's enormous frontiers.
The Roman army employed many different types of mounted troops, ranging from light cavalry used for reconnaissance and skirmishing to heavily protected horsemen intended for direct combat. Among the latter were the cataphractarii and clibanarii, whose development was influenced in part by the heavy cavalry traditions of the great eastern empires.
Roman cavalrymen could carry lances, swords and shields, while heavier formations increasingly employed extensive body armour. Their mobility allowed Roman commanders to reinforce threatened sectors rapidly, pursue defeated opponents and conduct operations over considerable distances.
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476, Roman military traditions continued to develop in the Eastern Roman Empire. During the reign of Emperor Justinian I (527-565), cavalry played a major role in the campaigns of commanders such as Belisarius and Narses, who temporarily recovered extensive territories of the former Western Empire.
The development of mounted warfare between the third and sixth centuries formed an important link between the cavalry traditions of the ancient world and the mounted warriors who would become increasingly prominent on medieval battlefields.
