Scythian Archer, Central Asia, 7th century BC, 1:30, Del Prado

The Scythians were nomadic peoples of Iranian origin who occupied extensive areas of the Eurasian steppes during Antiquity. From around the 7th century BC, they developed a culture closely associated with horses and warfare, extending their influence across large areas of Central Asia and the steppes north of the Black Sea.
Archers formed one of the fundamental elements of Scythian forces. Their characteristic weapon was the composite bow, relatively small but powerful and particularly well suited to mounted use. Warriors could fire rapidly while moving, harassing their opponents and avoiding close combat until conditions were favourable for an attack.
The combination of horse, bow and exceptional mobility made the Scythians particularly difficult opponents for sedentary armies. Their use of light cavalry and mounted archery would influence other peoples of the Eurasian steppes for centuries.
Scythian culture was also renowned for its sophisticated metalwork and the remarkable objects discovered in large burial mounds known as kurgans. Many of these works depict warriors, horses and animals in a distinctive artistic style, providing valuable evidence of Scythian clothing, weapons and everyday life.
