Second Lieutenant, Savoy Cavalry Regiment, 1915, 1:30, Del Prado

The Savoy Cavalry Regiment is one of the historic units of the Spanish cavalry. Its origins date back to the eighteenth century, and throughout its long history it participated in numerous conflicts and campaigns involving the Spanish Army. At the beginning of the twentieth century, cavalry still performed important reconnaissance, liaison and scouting duties, although the development of machine guns, modern artillery and other technological advances was rapidly transforming its traditional battlefield role.
This figure depicts a Second Lieutenant of the Spanish Savoy Cavalry Regiment in 1915, during the early years of the First World War. Spain remained neutral throughout the conflict, but the Spanish Army closely observed the war and the profound changes taking place in European cavalry tactics. The figure's uniform and equipment represent a transitional period between the traditional mounted soldier and the progressive modernisation that would eventually lead to the mechanisation of cavalry units during the following decades.
