Soldier, 1st German Cavalry Division, Russia, 1941, 1:30, Del Prado
The German 1st Cavalry Division (1. Kavallerie-Division) took part in the invasion of the Soviet Union during Operation Barbarossa in June 1941. Although mechanized warfare was rapidly replacing traditional cavalry, the division remained highly effective in reconnaissance, flank security, long-range patrols and pursuit operations. Its horses allowed the unit to operate across difficult terrain where motor vehicles often struggled, making it an important component of the German advance during the opening stages of the Eastern Front campaign.
This figure depicts a soldier of the German 1st Cavalry Division during the Russian campaign of 1941. Wearing the standard field uniform and carrying his personal equipment, he represents the cavalrymen who advanced deep into Soviet territory during the first months of Operation Barbarossa. Shortly afterwards, the division was reorganized and converted into the 24th Panzer Division, reflecting the increasing mechanization of the German Army.
