The 4th Light Dragoons served as part of the famous Light Brigade of the British Army during the Crimean War. On 25 October 1854 they took part in the Battle of Balaklava, where a misunderstanding of orders led to the legendary Charge of the Light Brigade. Nearly six hundred British cavalrymen rode directly against heavily defended Russian artillery in one of the most famous cavalry actions in military history. Although the charge resulted in severe casualties, the courage displayed by the troopers became an enduring symbol of bravery and sacrifice.
