Spitfire, Supermarine MK.XIVe, RAF No.127 Squadron, Germany, 1945 1:48, Hobby Master
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XIV was one of the most powerful and fastest versions of this legendary British fighter. Unlike the Merlin-powered variants, the Mk.XIV used the Rolls-Royce Griffon engine, whose greater power provided outstanding performance at high speeds and altitudes.
The Mk.XIV began entering operational service in 1944 and was initially used in the defence of Britain against V-1 flying bombs. It was subsequently employed in offensive operations over continental Europe as Allied forces advanced towards Germany.
James Edgar “Johnnie” Johnson was one of the RAF's most successful fighter pilots of the Second World War. After taking part in numerous campaigns and achieving an impressive number of aerial victories, he ended the war holding senior command positions within the Allied tactical air forces.
In 1945 Johnson commanded No. 125 Wing as part of the 2nd Tactical Air Force. His units advanced into Germany alongside the Allied armies, operating from airfields progressively closer to the front.
The Spitfire carrying the personal letters “JE-J” became one of the aircraft most closely associated with Johnnie Johnson. The letters represented his initials, James Edgar Johnson, and were carried by several Spitfires used by him during the war.
Johnson ended the Second World War with 34 individually confirmed aerial victories, together with shared victories and enemy aircraft damaged. His combat record and close association with the Spitfire made him one of the most celebrated British fighter pilots of the conflict.
