The Sukhoi Su-27 "Flanker" was developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau to counter new Western air superiority fighters such as the F-15 Eagle. Entering service during the 1980s, it combined exceptional manoeuvrability, long range and a powerful radar system, making it one of the most capable fighters of its generation. Powered by two Saturn AL-31F turbofan engines and armed with a wide range of short- and long-range air-to-air missiles, the Su-27 was designed to secure air superiority across the vast airspace of the Soviet Union and later the Russian Federation.
This model depicts a Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker of the 941st Fighter Aviation Regiment (941st IAP) of the Russian Air Force in 2012. During this period, the regiment formed part of Russia's tactical aviation modernisation programme, carrying out air defence missions, operational deployments and large-scale military exercises. Although newer aircraft such as the Su-30SM and Su-35S were gradually entering service, the Su-27 remained one of the backbone fighters of the Russian Air Force and a lasting symbol of Russian military aviation.
