Grumman F14B Tomcat US Navy VF-102 Diamondbacks, Operation Enduring Freedom, 2001, 1:72, JC Wings
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was one of the most iconic carrier-based fighters ever operated by the United States Navy. Designed to provide fleet air defence and air superiority, it featured variable-sweep wings, the powerful AN/AWG-9 radar and the ability to carry the long-range AIM-54 Phoenix missile. During more than thirty years of service, the Tomcat participated in numerous combat operations and became a symbol of U.S. Naval Aviation.
This model represents an F-14 Tomcat of Fighter Squadron VF-102 "Diamondbacks" during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, carrier-based F-14s flew combat air patrol, escort, reconnaissance and precision strike missions over Afghanistan from aircraft carriers operating in the Arabian Sea. The Diamondbacks played an important role during the opening stages of the campaign, demonstrating the Tomcat's versatility as both an air superiority fighter and a precision strike aircraft.
