Kievski Hussar Soldier, 11th, 1:30, Del Prado

Hussars were one of the most distinctive branches of European light cavalry and had an important presence within the Imperial Russian Army. Originally inspired by Hungarian mounted traditions, Russian hussar regiments developed their own identity during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and became highly valued for their mobility and offensive capabilities.
The Kiev Hussar Regiment formed part of this light cavalry tradition. Its horsemen were trained for reconnaissance, flank protection, patrol and pursuit duties, as well as mounted charges against enemy formations when battlefield conditions required them.
Hussars were also renowned for their colourful uniforms, typically featuring close-fitting garments decorated with elaborate cords and braiding, together with other distinctive items of dress that changed considerably throughout their history. The sabre was one of their characteristic weapons and was particularly suited to mounted combat.
The immense geographical extent of the Russian Empire made mounted units particularly valuable. Their ability to move rapidly allowed them to scout large areas, maintain communications between different army formations and respond quickly to unexpected enemy movements.
The 11th Kiev Hussar Regiment remained part of the cavalry of the Imperial Russian Army into the early twentieth century, preserving the traditions associated with Russia's celebrated hussar regiments.
