Ukrainian Cossack, 1:30, Del Prado

Ukrainian Cossacks emerged as military communities established mainly along the frontier regions of the southern and southeastern European steppes. From the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries onwards, they acquired increasing military and political importance, developing a culture closely associated with horsemanship and the defence of frontier territories.
Among the most important Cossack organisations were the Zaporozhian Cossacks, whose political and military centre was the Zaporozhian Sich in the Dnieper region. These communities consisted of free men organised along military lines who elected their own leaders, including the hetman or senior commander.
Cavalry formed an important element of Cossack forces. Cossack horsemen were noted for their mobility, knowledge of the terrain and ability to conduct reconnaissance, raids and rapid attacks. Although they were also effective when fighting on foot, horses allowed them to cover considerable distances across the vast steppes and surprise their opponents.
Their weapons could include sabres, lances, pistols and long firearms, combining elements from several Eastern European military traditions. Cossack clothing likewise reflected Polish, Tatar, Ottoman and other influences resulting from centuries of contact between neighbouring peoples.
During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Cossacks played a prominent role in numerous Eastern European conflicts and in the complex relations between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Russian Tsardom, the Ottoman Empire and the Crimean Khanate.
The mounted Ukrainian Cossack ultimately became one of the most recognisable symbols of the military traditions of the Eastern European steppes.
