Submarine I-401, Japan, World War II, 1: 350, Editions Atlas
DEFECTIVE: BROKEN RUDDER, INCLUDED.
Sen Toku-class I-401 became the largest submarine in the world. It was commanded by Lieutenant Commander Nobukiyo Nambu of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. Able to carry three Aichi M6A1 "Seiran" bombers.
It was put into service on January 8, 1945 in the naval district of Kure, World War II was almost over. This left the fate of I-401 uncertain. After several attempts to set sail, I-401 set the course for its first objective but was stopped by the order of Emperor Hirohito asking for the end of all hostilities, on August 15, 1945. On August 26, the I-401 hoisted the black surrender flag. Its unmanned aircraft were catapulted into the sea, the 20 type 95 torpedoes were destroyed and all codes, records, letters and secret documents were destroyed. Three days later, on August 29, I-401 was detected on the radar of USS Segundo. I-401 surrendered to the American ship. Lieutenant Commander Nobukiyo Nambu delivered two katanas, as a symbol of surrender, to Lieutenant John Edward Balson, crew officer of the Second. I-401 eventually sank when it was used as a target ship, off Pearl Harbor on May 31, 1946.
