The Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party) soldier fought in a brutal war marked by the Japanese invasion, extreme poverty, and internal conflict. Under Chiang Kai-shek's command, he fought from 1937 in the Second Sino-Japanese War, a bitter struggle that became part of the global conflict of World War II. Poorly armed and poorly supplied, this soldier faced the Imperial Japanese Army in mountains, rivers, and cities, paying a high price in lives. Despite the difficulties, he resisted for years in hellish conditions, becoming a symbol of the Chinese national struggle. His loyalty to the Kuomintang also later led him to a civil war against the communists, making his experience one of the most intense and tragic of the 20th century.
