MIG-3, Guard Regiment, Moscow 1942, 1:72, Altaya
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3 was one of the principal fighters of the Soviet Air Force during the early years of the Great Patriotic War. Developed from the earlier MiG-1, the MiG-3 made its maiden flight in 1940 and was designed as a high-altitude interceptor capable of engaging enemy bombers. Although its low-altitude performance was inferior to that of some other Soviet fighters, it excelled at high altitude thanks to its impressive speed and operational ceiling. During the defense of Moscow in 1941 and 1942, several Soviet Guards units operated the MiG-3 in interception, air defense and escort missions. Soviet pilots appreciated its robust construction and its ability to operate under the harsh conditions of the Eastern Front. Although gradually replaced by more advanced fighters, the MiG-3 played an important role in the Soviet Union's resistance during the critical early stages of the war against Germany.
