The first strategic Soviet bomber
The design of the Pe-8 four-engined heavy bomber began in July 1934 at the OKB (Design Office) of V.M. Petlyakov who was directed by the famous engineer A. N. Tupolev. The construction process, delimited by some specifications among which stood out the need to have a good performance in any climatic circumstance and, above all, more than 8,000 m high, was quite complex -it was Petlyakov's first great design experience- especially in the development of the long fuselage and wings of the model, called ANT-42.In the fall of 1936 the first prototype came out of the factory, which presented modern lines: it was a cantilevered wing monoplane metal construction, and was expected to be driven by four engines with an overcompressor installed inside the fuselage. The crew -even men- was very numerous in relation to other big bombers of World War II, but necessary to attend the different positions, especially the defensive ones. The ANT-42 was equipped with two machine guns, one located in the dorsal electric turret and one in the caudal position, which were later replaced by ShVAK 20 mm guns. A similar weapon was mounted on the forward turret, but the novelty of the design was the firing positions located in the rear section of each gondola of the internal engines, defended with a 12.7 mm machine gun. For the internal loading of pumps a cellar with space for six pumps of 100 kg or four of 250 kg was enabled; in short distances, it could transport up to 4,000 kg of them and the spacecraft was enabled for a huge 5,000 kg pump.
