Spitfire Mk. VIII A53-379, flown by F/L David Glaser, No. 549 Sqn., Strauss Airstrip, Sept 1944, , 1:48, Hobby Master
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk. VIII, serial number A53-379, was one of the fighters serving with No. 549 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Piloted by David Glaser, this aircraft operated from Strauss Air Base in the Northern Territory during September 1944.
The Mk. VIII model was an evolution of R. J. Mitchell's iconic design, which included improvements to the Rolls-Royce Merlin 66 engine and adaptations for flying in tropical and arid climates. These features made it perfect for the air defense of northern Australia, a key region against the Japanese threat in the Pacific.
At Strauss, the Spitfires of 549 Squadron carried out patrol and defense missions, ensuring the protection of Australian airspace at a critical time in the war. Although the main front had already moved north, the presence of these aircraft not only provided security, but also symbolized the collaboration between Australia and the United Kingdom in the war effort.
