On March 17, 2010, the Secretary of Defense of the United States announced that on September 1, 2010 the presence of the United States in Iraq would change from "Operation Iraqi Freedom" to "Operation New Dawn." The United States would begin withdrawing a large part of its force from Iraq and transferred them to Kuwait. Defense missions were transferred to Iraqi troops that had been trained by NATO forces. Together with the trucks and CH-47 Chinooks AH-64 Apache Gun-ships they provided aerial protection against any attack.
