Heavy Cruiser Admiral Hipper, Kriegsmarine, 1939, 1: 1250, DeAgostini
The Admiral Hipper was a German heavy cruiser, leader of its class, which served in the Kriegsmarine during World War II. It was named in honor of Admiral Franz von Hipper, commander of the German battlecruiser squadron during the Battle of Jutland and then Commander-in-Chief of the High Seas Fleet. Admiral Hipper was involved in numerous war actions during the world conflict. He led the assault on Trondheim during Operation Weserübung and while en route to this objective he sank the British destroyer HMS Glowworm. In December 1940 it stormed the Atlantic Ocean to attack allied merchant ships, although this operation ended without significant success. In February 1941 the Hipper tried again, sinking several merchant ships before returning to Germany via the Straits of Denmark. The cruiser was then sent to northern Norway to participate in operations against convoys bound for the Soviet Union, culminating in the Battle of the Barents Sea on December 31, 1942, where it was damaged and forced to retreat by the harassment of the British light cruisers HMS Sheffield and HMS Jamaica.
